Even if there was less theater than usual last season, there was still enough theater and, above all, enough quality. Therefore, regardless of the pandemic, critics again chose a best-of of the season in the magazine “Theater heute”. The big winner is the Schauspielhaus Zurich. Director Christopher Rüpings (first analog, then digital) Production “Simply the End of the World” after Jean-Luc Lagarce was awarded as the best production, Benjamin Lillie, who plays the leading role in it, is best actor. Maja Beckmann, also in the production and also in Leonie Böhm’s impressive “Medea”, is actress of the year.
Noteworthy is Cosmea Spelleken’s award as Young Director of the Year. Her completely digital and low budget project “Werther.live” became something like the unexpected darling of the home theater audience.
The piece of the year comes from Sibylle Berg, “And surely the world has disappeared with me”, premiered last autumn at the Gorki Theater in Berlin. Ewe Benbenek was elected young author of the year with her play “Tragödienbastard”, she also received the Mülheim Dramatic Prize 2021.
