Couple receives most highly endowed German research prize – Economy

Stefanie Jegelka drops perhaps the most important sentence almost casually. “Research, you have to have your heart in it,” she says as she explains the relationship between research and teaching at German universities. Jegelka and her husband Suvrit Sra have to get used to it a little. The two artificial intelligence experts, who are now researching at the Technical University of Munich, previously worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In the USA, research is the main focus, in Germany teaching plays a much bigger role. There is less time for research.
