British government strengthens pubs and restaurants

Seven-day incidence rises to 8.6

The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has risen again. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced, citing information from the health authorities, the incidence was 8.6. The previous day the value was 8.0, a week ago it was 5.5. The seven-day incidence is an essential benchmark for tightening or relaxing corona requirements. It indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within this period. According to the latest information from the RKI, 1456 new corona infections (previous day: 1642) and 18 deaths related to the virus were registered within 24 hours. The total number of corona infections recorded in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic was 3,741,781, and a total of 91,337 corona deaths were counted. The RKI stated the number of those recovered from a corona infection at around 3,638,200.

Eiffel Tower reopens

The Eiffel Tower reopens for visitors today after a month-long Corona break. Online tickets for the day of the reopening were already sold out in advance. The Paris landmark was closed for almost nine months due to the Corona crisis. It also got a new coat of paint. It had to close temporarily last spring due to the pandemic. When visiting the Eiffel Tower, you must wear a mask and keep your distance. From July 21, adults must then show evidence of a test, vaccination or recovery.

The tower, which is more than 130 years old, not far from the Seine, has been visited by around seven million people every year. In the past year, however, there were significantly fewer tourists because of the mandatory Corona breaks and the lack of international visitors.

Japan’s government promises “safe games”

A week before the start of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga confirmed his decision to implement “safe” games. “In order to protect the life and health of the population, thorough measures are being taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” said Suga at a meeting of the members of his government responsible for the Olympics.

The games, postponed by a year due to Corona, are scheduled to open on July 23. The Japanese daily “Asahi Shimbun”, one of the sponsors of the games, reported meanwhile of “chaos” at airports among the employees who tried to lead Olympic delegations. There are also problems in enforcing the rules of conduct for Olympic participants in hotels. A week before the start of the Games it had already become “obvious” that the organizers’ plans to separate Olympic participants and the general population had “failed miserably”.
