Proceedings against alleged 9/11 masterminds suspended due to Corona

The proceedings against the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, in the US prison camp at Guantanamo have been interrupted again. The presiding judge is suspending the preliminary negotiations on Friday after a corona infection was found among the journalists present, the court announced. Another person present during the hearings showed symptoms, but infection has not yet been proven.

The hearing on Friday was supposed to be the last of the two-week session after the proceedings were resumed after an interruption of around one and a half years. Apart from the renewed interruption, it is still completely unclear when the actual process will begin. The new, already eighth judge in the case, Air Force Colonel Matthew McCall, had reiterated that there was “movement”. Along with Mohammed, four other defendants had appeared before the military tribunal in the previous hearings – Ramsi Binalshibh, Mustafa al-Hawsawi, Ammar al-Baluchi and Walid bin Attash. The five men are charged with terrorism and murder in 2976 cases, among other things. If convicted, they face the death penalty.
