Coronavirus in Germany: Delta variant dominates for the first time

The particularly contagious Delta variant is now the predominant mutant in Germany as well. Almost two thirds of the new infections are now on your account. In the UK, Delta caused an extreme increase in cases.

In Germany, the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus has become the predominant mutant. It dominated for the first time with a share of 59 percent, according to the latest weekly analysis by the Robert Koch Institute with a view to the 25th calendar week (June 21-27).

It can be assumed that almost two thirds of the PCR-confirmed new corona infections are now infected with the delta variant (B.1.617.2) and only one third with the alpha mutant. The alpha share quickly fell from 91 percent at the end of May to 33 percent at the end of June. Other virus variants currently do not play a role in Germany. Only some of the positive corona samples are examined for variants.

The comparison shows that the proportion of the Delta variant continues to increase sharply and has almost doubled again from 37 to 59 percent within a week, the report said. This sharp increase is accompanied by a slight increase in the number of cases and a continued low single-digit level of the seven-day incidence. However, experts fear a trend reversal as the delta spreads, as in Great Britain in May.

Seven-day incidence rises to 256 in the UK

In Great Britain, meanwhile, with more than 32,500 new corona cases in one day, the highest daily value since January was recorded. The number of new infections as well as deaths and hospital admissions rose by more than 40 percent in the past week compared to the previous week, according to the British authorities. The reason is the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, which is responsible for almost all corona cases in the United Kingdom.

The seven-day incidence increased to 256.2. In Germany, this value is currently 5. The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson still wants to lift all corona rules on July 19. The government expects that the number of new infections could rise to 100,000 a day due to the lifting of the corona rules.

According to calculations by the CDC, the particularly contagious delta variant is already dominant in the USA. The proportion of the mutant in the new infections had risen to 51.7 percent in the two weeks up to July 3, the authority announced. The proportion of the previously predominant alpha variant has fallen to 28.7 percent.
