Federal government “deeply dismayed” by the death of an Austrian doctor

The federal government was “deeply dismayed” by the suicide of the Austrian doctor Lisa-Maria Kellermayr, who was threatened by opponents of the Corona measures. A government spokesman said in Berlin today that Chancellor Scholz and the federal government are particularly concerned to stand up against hate together with our Austrian friends. Threats, violence and hate speech are to be condemned in the strongest terms, especially when they are directed against medical staff and doctors. The German security authorities cooperated with the Austrian authorities in the investigation. “Digital hate” on the Internet too often goes unpunished, the spokesman said. “We will fight digital violence with all our constitutional means and the harshness of the law.”

Court: dismissal due to possible corona disease lawful

The Berlin police are allowed to exclude a person suspected of being infected with Corona from a demonstration. The Administrative Court of Berlin decided today. According to the court, the plaintiff saw his freedom of assembly violated by being expelled from the police station. On September 25, 2021, he was in a public place at a meeting of corona deniers. After an anonymous tip and the evaluation of posts on social networks, the police assumed that the man could have contracted the corona virus at a party a few days earlier. He was therefore expelled from the place.

According to the administrative court, the reprimand was right and proportionate because there was a risk of infection for the other people on the square. According to the court, if a minimum distance of 1.5 meters is not used, a risk of transmission can also be assumed outdoors without the use of masks. In addition, the obligation to wear a mask for the plaintiff would not have been a milder means because this would not have reduced the risk of transmission to zero.

Half-yearly balance: flights within Germany are hardly in demand

The Corona crisis has apparently left lasting marks on German air traffic. In the first half of 2022, there were still far fewer flights in Germany than before the pandemic, according to the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry. Above all, outside the hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, the companies cut back their offers, so that in June only 29 percent of the pre-crisis level was reached. Almost every third route (31 percent) was completely discontinued. The number of passengers at German airports reached 59 percent. Especially in the first quarter (January to March), the Omikron variant and the associated travel warnings and restrictions had significantly dampened the desire to travel among passengers. With the withdrawal of most of the warnings at Easter, demand then skyrocketed and quickly led to massive handling problems at several German airports.

Negotiations on new Infection Protection Act ended

According to Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), the traffic light coalition has finished negotiating the new infection protection law, which is intended to curb another corona wave in autumn. “I think the package is very good. We are prepared for the fall,” said Lauterbach to the newspapers of the Funke media group about the draft law negotiated with Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP). “At the same time, it protects us from being overburdened by too many Covid patients and from a critical situation caused by staff shortages.” Lauterbach did not provide any specific information about the components of the package, but the presentation is expected shortly. This is about follow-up regulations of the Corona provisions in the Infection Protection Act, which expire on September 23. They are the legal basis for the corona protection measures of the federal states.

RKI reports 87,681 new infections nationwide

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Wednesday morning at 477.9. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. The day before, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 516.1 (previous week: 652.0; previous month: 665.0). The health authorities in Germany recently reported 87,681 new corona infections (previous week: 121,780) and 210 deaths (previous week: 181) to the RKI within one day.

Note on the current numbers: The incidence values do not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests are included in the official statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.
