Corona subsidy fraud: On the trail of the billion-dollar rip-off – Munich

In Munich alone there have already been more than 500 proceedings for subsidies that were unjustifiably collected during the pandemic. So far, prosecutors have mainly caught smaller fish, now they are chasing the big ones.

It’s amazing what prosecutors find when they look for evidence of possible corona subsidy scams. When Munich prosecutors were on March 8th as part of a Bavaria-wide raid on a tax consultant, they came across a luxury Bentley car, reportedly with gold-plated rims. However, since they only had a search warrant and no seizure of property, they were not allowed to take the car with them. The accused consultant cannot drive it at the moment anyway: With a short break, he has been in custody since July 2022. The Munich I public prosecutor accuses him of fraud amounting to 2.6 million euros. “Since further investigations are underway, the final damage cannot be finally quantified,” it said in response to a request from the SZ: “It is very likely that further damage in the millions will be proven.”
