The omicron wave is rolling and could lead to new contact restrictions faster than expected. This emerges from the draft resolution for the federal-state conference tomorrow, Tuesday, as several media report unanimously.

The federal and state governments are planning contact restrictions for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered after Christmas. This emerges from a draft resolution for the federal-state conference on Tuesday, which is available to “n-tv”, “Spiegel” and “Bild”. “In particular, New Year’s Eve celebrations with a large number of people are unjustifiable in the current situation,” it says.

New contact restrictions from December 28th

Accordingly, from December 28, gatherings of vaccinated and convalescent people should only be allowed with a maximum of ten people. This upper limit applies equally to private indoor and outdoor meetings. Children up to 14 years of age are exempt from this. As soon as an unvaccinated person takes part, according to the paper, the contact restrictions for unvaccinated people apply: The meeting is then limited to one’s own household and a maximum of two people from another household. As a further measure, the closure of clubs and discos is being considered.

How the new restrictions will turn out in detail is open. Federal Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner spoke out against closings of shops, restaurants and schools. “We do not want any blanket closings of schools, nor do we want a blanket closure of restaurants, hotels and retail,” he said. The position of the FDP is therefore partly in contradiction to the proposed resolution.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) assumes that there will be an agreement. Among other things, one will deal with the private contacts of vaccinated persons, “and make individual additional decisions in this direction,” said Scholz on Monday during his inaugural visit to Rome. “The result will be that I believe we can establish a consensual approach. That is important, especially now at this time and at this moment.”

An “emergency plan” is also being prepared

In addition, the federal government and the federal states are preparing for the possible extreme case that the spread of the omicron variant should largely paralyze public life. To this end, an “emergency plan should be decided by the federal-state conference.” The Omikron variant urges absolute vigilance, “said the chairman of the conference of prime ministers, North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU), on Monday in the ARD Tuesday was to adopt an “emergency plan” to “keep the country running” if a large number of people were to contract the coronavirus at the same time, in areas such as health and care, electricity and water supply and garbage disposal.

Preparations for such plans began in the federal authorities. According to a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior, “the basic functions of the authorities are guaranteed even in the pandemic”. Some of these plans are already in force – but they are now being revised on the basis of the recommendations of the Federal Government’s Expert Council on how to use Omikron. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief has “contacts with all operators of critical infrastructure,” said the spokesman. In addition, the level of infections in the authorities is continuously recorded.
