Dehoga sees a lack of employees as a major problem in the spring

At the end of last year, hotels and restaurants in Lower Saxony earned significantly less money than before the corona pandemic. “According to our current survey, sales in December 2021 were about 54 percent below those of December 2019. 43 percent fell in November,” said Rainer Balke, general manager of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) in Lower Saxony, the “Nordwest-Zeitung “. In the corona pandemic, almost every fourth job in the hospitality industry in Lower Saxony was lost. This mainly affected mini-jobbers because they did not receive short-time work or unemployment benefits. “When business picks up again in the spring, the lack of employees will become a major problem. This applies in particular to holiday regions such as the coast and islands. The situation is disastrous for inner-city companies that live from trade fairs or events,” emphasized Balke.

According to him, the aggressiveness of customers towards employees has increased. “Whenever a Corona regulation was tightened, expressions of displeasure from customers increased. Many restaurateurs have no choice but to report incidents and issue house bans.”

Corona rules on buses and trains: HVV takes stock of the controls

After the introduction of the 3G obligation at the end of November, the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) now has one taken stock of his controls. Evidence of 284,000 passengers was checked. The HVV found 4,486 violations – that’s 1.5 percent of those checked. The passengers were therefore neither vaccinated nor recovered or recently tested. It is unclear whether they all had to pay the fine of 150 euros – plus a penalty of 80 euros. There are apparently violations of the FFP2 mask requirement, which has been in force since Saturday, much more frequently. The HVV does not give any figures, but assumes that 10 to 20 percent are still wearing the thinner surgical masks. This should cost a fine of 40 euros.

More and more vaccination card fakes all over the north

In Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg and Bremen, more and more fake vaccination certificates, proof of corona recovery and test certificates have recently been found. Depending on the federal state, the numbers are between a few hundred and a low four-digit range. The periods in which the violations were detected differ, as does the nature of the forged documents, making comparison difficult.

  • Lower Saxony: Fakes in the low four-digit range for the year 2021
  • Schleswig Holstein: so far almost 100 cases in 2022, 750 in 2021
  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 213 criminal charges as of January 16, 2022
  • Hamburg: 832 cases of fake certificates
  • Bremen: 190 criminal charges so far in total

Since November 24, falsification of health documents can be punished more severely. There is a risk of fines or imprisonment of up to two years, in particularly serious cases even up to five years.

Private saunas are trending during the pandemic

While public saunas had to close for months during the pandemic, manufacturers are increasingly selling saunas to private individuals. A wooden barrel sauna, for example, can be placed in the garden and can even be transported and rented on a trailer. “While public sauna baths have to cope with a 30 to 50 percent drop in sales due to the pandemic, manufacturers with private saunas have 15 to 20 percent higher sales revenues,” says Rolf-Andreas Pieper, member of the Presidium of the German Sauna Association. Many people did not want to give up their health-oriented hobby during the pandemic.

A sixth of the students in quarantine or ill: school in times of omicron

Despite the high number of new infections Hamburg is also sticking to face-to-face teaching in schools. But there are increasing failures. At the Goethe School in Harburg, for example, around 300 of the 1,750 students are missing because they are suffering from Corona or are in quarantine. How do students and teachers deal with the situation with multiple tests per week and compulsory masks in physical education classes? NDR Info reporter Carsten Pilger asked around.

Hamburg: First citizenship meeting in 2022 under stricter conditions

The Hamburg Parliament is starting its first meeting of the new year this afternoon under tightened corona rules. Because of the rampant omicron variant, Parliament President Carola Veit has decreed that there is now a general obligation to wear an FFP2 mask in the town hall. The 3G rule applies to MPs and the Senate – i.e. vaccinated, recovered or tested negative. Parliamentarians who cannot prove vaccination or recovered status or who have a negative corona test can attend the meetings, but must sit in a separate area. It was ensured that they could actively participate in the meetings.

The corona pandemic will also be the focus of the current hour. The Hamburg Parliament is currently dealing with 3G controls and the FFP2 mask requirement in local public transport, among other things.

Intensive care physician: “A few came with omicron”

The head of the clinic for intensive care at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Stefan Kluge, described the situation in the intensive care units as stable in an interview with the Hamburg Journal on NDR television. “We have a few who have now come with Omikron. They also have severe courses if they are not vaccinated. Almost all of the vaccinated have mild courses,” said Kluge. However, he is concerned about the personnel situation: “We have many sick employees.” That is “borderline” and “poses challenges for us”.
