Corona new infections: Delta share probably around 50 percent

Status: 30.06.2021 7:48 p.m.

The proportion of the delta variant in corona infections continues to rise sharply: The Robert Koch Institute estimates that the variant should already account for at least half of all new infections this week.

In Germany, the proportion of the delta variant in new corona infections will soon rise to over 50 percent, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Delta was detected in almost 37 percent of the samples, the institute announced in its current report on virus variants, referring to the status of calendar week 24 (June 14 to June 20).

Compared to the previous week, the proportion of the variant is more than twice as high. However, only some of the positive corona samples are examined for variants.

According to the institute, the currently available data show that it can be expected that Delta will prevail over the other variants, in particular also over the previously dominant Alpha variant. According to this, Delta mutants should already account for at least half of all new infections this week (26th calendar week).

Overall incidence continues to decline

Despite the increasing proportion and increasing number of cases of the delta variant, the overall incidence in Germany continues to decrease. In the morning, the RKI reported 404 new corona infections. A week ago the value was 455 infections. The RKI gave the seven-day incidence nationwide as 5.4 (previous day: 5.6; previous week: 8.0).

According to the information, 57 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 77 deaths. The RKI has counted 3,727,333 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.
