The next Corona summit is imminent, the federal and state governments will presumably decide to relax. But one is already pushing ahead: Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder. He has lifted the contact restrictions in his state.

The government cabinet in Munich has decided to remove the current contact restrictions for vaccinated and recovered people completely and without replacement. Citizens can again meet privately in groups of any size. Previously, meetings were limited to ten people. The contact rules for unvaccinated people, on the other hand, will remain unchanged until further notice.

Bavaria is also relaxing the rules in other areas of public life, including sports, cultural and leisure events. Where the 2G plus rule has applied so far, only 2G will apply in the future. This means that additional tests or booster vaccinations are no longer necessary. “We are team caution and team freedom, but not team stubborn,” said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) after the cabinet meeting. You just go by the “objective standard” of dangerousness.

Corona-unvaccinated people are allowed to go back to universities

From Thursday onwards, unvaccinated people will have access to some other areas of public life again – if they show a negative test instead. 3G instead of the previous 2G will then apply to universities, extracurricular education, vocational training, further education and training, music schools, libraries and archives, museums and exhibitions, fitness studios and solariums.

Children and young people under the age of 18 who are regularly tested for the corona virus at school will in future have the same status as those who have recovered or who have been vaccinated. In the future, you will have access to all 2G areas even without a corona vaccination. For trading, service and craft businesses, the number of customers is no longer limited from one customer to 10 square meters.

Prime Minister Söder had called for the gradual exit strategy from the corona restrictions before the federal-state meeting. “If the omicron peak is reached and the health system is still intact, it needs to start the phase-out”. At the same time, he called for a longer-term legal basis for protective measures such as the obligation to wear masks and distance rules, as well as an emergency strategy for possible new waves.

“Decisions must not be postponed on Wednesday. Now is the time to set the course – not rushed, but gradually,” said Söder. Basically, he called for a revision of the entire Corona regulations. “Unfortunately, Germany has become entangled in a tangle of different regulations. We therefore need fewer rules and instead need clear and understandable principles.”

In fact, according to the will of the FDP, the legal basis for the corona protection measures, which is limited to March 19, should be completely eliminated. If this happens, “at least protective measures such as masks and distance are needed,” said Söder. “However, a legal basis is necessary for this. All of this must be decided and planned now. In addition, an emergency strategy against possible new waves and mutations is required. Postponement does not apply this time.”
