Contract signed in Abu Dhabi: Germany receives liquid gas from the Emirates

The first delivery of liquid gas from the United Arab Emirates is scheduled to arrive at the LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel in December. A corresponding contract was signed during Chancellor Scholz’s visit to Abu Dhabi.

The German government has taken a step forward in its search for a short-term replacement for the gas that is no longer supplied by Russia: the first delivery of liquefied gas from the United Arab Emirates is expected to arrive in December, as was the case during the visit of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the United Arab Emirates (UAE ) was announced.

The Essen-based energy group RWE signed a contract in the UAE for an initial delivery of 137,000 cubic meters of LNG. It is scheduled to arrive at the new LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel at the mouth of the Elbe in December. According to RWE, a memorandum on multi-year deliveries from 2023 has been signed.

“We’ll get through this winter”

Scholz was confident about the upcoming heating season. The federal government made very far-reaching decisions that would have contributed to Germany’s security of supply “being secured to an extent that could not have been expected months ago,” he said. “Now that autumn has just begun, we can say we’re getting through this winter.”

The construction of terminals on the north German coasts, the expansion of capacities for liquid gas imports and more opportunities to import gas from the Netherlands and Norway, for example, contributed to this. All of this meant that the storage facilities could be filled up. In addition, coal-fired power plants would continue to be used and it would be ensured that the nuclear power plants in the south could continue to run.

No more dependencies on a partner

The Federal Chancellor emphasized how important it is to rely on as many suppliers as possible for the energy supply. Dependence on one supplier “will certainly not happen to us again,” said Scholz. One no longer wants to be limited to a few suppliers, as in the past, “but to have a wide range of sources in order to be able to guarantee energy security in Germany”.

Advance production of LPG in the world

Referring to the expansion of gas production in the Gulf States, he added: “It is important that projects like this are completed everywhere. We must ensure that the production of LNG in the world is advanced enough to meet the high demand that the exists, can be served without having to resort to the production capacities that exist in Russia.” This is linked to all the gas projects that are going on all over the world.

Development towards a climate-neutral economy

It is about the long-term development towards a climate-neutral economy. “And that can only succeed in close cooperation with the countries that have played such a major role in the provision of fossil resources and continue to invest on a large scale in their own interest, so that they will be able to make a contribution in the world of the future for the world’s energy supply,” said Scholz.

The Emirati state agency WAM said that Emirati President Mohammed bin Sajid and Scholz had described “cooperation, dialogue and priority for diplomatic solutions” as key in dealing with “various problems and crises”.

Qatar has the third largest gas reserves in the world

Until the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Germany still obtained 55 percent of its natural gas from Russia. Deliveries from there have now largely ceased and the German gas suppliers are looking for new sources of supply.

The United Arab Emirates have the seventh largest natural gas reserves in the world. Qatar has the third largest gas reserves in the world and is a leading exporter of LNG. So far there have been no concrete supply agreements with Qatar, just an “energy partnership” signed by Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck during his visit there in March.

The following comparison shows that the contract now concluded with the UAE is only a small first step: According to the operator, on February 1 alone, before the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, gas with an energy volume of 1.7 million kilowatt hours flowed through the northern pipeline Stream 1. The first delivery of 137,000 cubic meters of liquid gas for RWE by ship from the United Arab Emirates, which has now been agreed, corresponds to 1.37 million kilowatt hours.
