Consumer protection: EU demands more transparency from Google

The European Commission, together with national consumer protection authorities, calls on the Internet group Google to be more transparent. Specifically, the point is that consumers should learn how the order of search results comes about and whether money plays a role, as the Commission announced.

In addition, if the search engine shows prices for flights or hotels, they should be final and include additional fees and taxes that may already be calculated.

“EU consumers must not be misled”

“EU consumers must not be misled when they use search engines to plan their vacation,” said EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders. “We need to enable consumers to make their decisions based on transparent and unbiased information.”

In addition, it is warned that if consumer protection authorities report violations of protective provisions, this content should be removed or deactivated by Google more quickly.

The EU Commission expects Google to announce within two months to what extent it has changed its practices.
