Nocturnal fright for a senior citizen in Rhineland-Palatinate: she called the police because of a burglar. The drunk intruder must have made a mistake in the door.

Confusion with consequences: A drunk intruder triggered a police operation in Frankenthal, Rhineland-Palatinate, on New Year’s Eve. At around 4 a.m., a 78-year-old senior alerted the local police about a burglar. A man she does not know is working in the entrance area of her apartment.

The intruder had apparently made a mistake about the apartment. When the two met, the apparently very drunk 21-year-old told the senior that this was his apartment – and then fled the apartment again.

Identical apartment next door

The police called in later found the alleged intruder in a structurally identical apartment in the same building complex. The lights were still on there and when the officers rang the doorbell, the drunk man who matched the description of the elderly woman opened the door. Since his key was only suitable for the house entrance and not for the neighbor’s apartment, he had forcibly gained entry there before he realized his mistake.

Elsewhere, too, the police had to move out on New Year’s Eve. Even if it was generally quieter than usual, not everything turned out as lightly as the incident in Frankenthal. Despite the ban on firecrackers, there were some serious accidents. In Hennef, a man died at a private New Year’s Eve party after a firecracker exploded, another is in mortal danger. There were also life-threatening firecrackers accidents in Hamburg and Melle in Lower Saxony. In Austria a man died from a bullet bomb explosion.
