In these attacks by militias supported by Iran, three US soldiers were injured, one of them seriously, Austen said on Monday evening (local time). On the instructions of US President Joe Biden, “necessary and proportional” strikes were carried out against three bases used by these militias.
At the same time, the US Secretary of Defense warned of further attacks against US soldiers in the region. “We do not want to escalate the conflict in the region, but we are determined and ready to take further necessary measures to protect our people and facilities.”
The Iraqi government condemned the US strikes as a “clear hostile act.” At least one military member was killed, according to Iraqi sources, and 18 other people were injured, according to a government post on X (formerly Twitter). There are also said to have been civilians among them. The attack represented an “unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty.” At the same time, the government continued to condemn the militias’ attacks on “headquarters of foreign diplomatic missions.” In any case they are unacceptable.
