Conflict in Yemen: Germany supplies arms to warring parties

The federal government has approved further arms deliveries to Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Sudan, among others. The countries are participating in the coalition led by Saudi Arabia in the war in Yemen.

Germany continues to deliver weapons to the countries involved in the war in Yemen. For Kuwait alone, between December 8, 2021 and September 13 of this year, the German government issued 14 individual export licenses worth 1.3 million euros. This emerges from a response from the federal government to a request from the left-wing member of the Bundestag Sevim Dagdelen, from which the KNA news agency quotes.

For Egypt, there were three permits for around 377,000 euros. Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Sudan are also on the list of recipients. These countries are participating in the Saudi-led coalition in the war in Yemen.

No armaments for Saudi Arabia

No exports of armaments were approved for Saudi Arabia itself. A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Economics recently confirmed to the KNA that future applications for exports to Saudi Arabia would also be rejected.

However, there is a special case. “Germany’s special obligations towards NATO allies are being fulfilled. Within this narrow framework, export permits are possible as an exception,” said the spokesman.

Deliveries also to Jordan, Oman and Qatar

As can be seen from the Federal Government’s response to MP Dagdelen, other countries in the Middle East and on the Arabian Peninsula are among the recipients of German arms deliveries. In addition to Jordan and Oman, this is primarily Qatar. Here the federal government issued 46 individual export licenses for 20.7 million euros.
