Concern in Berlin: Taliban tribunals for local workers?

FDP parliamentary group vice Lambsdorff is concerned about reports that the Taliban are summoning former local staff to show trials. The Dutch television station NOS had reported threats against former interpreters.

It is no secret that Afghans who used to work for the international community, so-called local workers, believe that their lives are in danger. But if the reports of the Dutch television broadcaster NOS harden, the situation will become more and more dramatic: In a letter from the Taliban to a former interpreter, the broadcaster said literally: “We will take revenge. we will take care of that with your relatives. ”

According to the NOS, this and other letters are officially stamped by the extremists. The families of ex-employees of the international troops who are in hiding are reportedly being summoned to court. If they did not appear before a tribunal, the relatives could face severe penalties, according to NOS research.

If the reports of the planned show trials are correct, a special EU summit is needed, tweeted FDP parliamentary group vice-president Alexander Graf Lambsdorff. One should “not forget those who deserve protection, even in these domestically shaped times.”

The Federal Foreign Office initially did not want to comment on the reports when asked.
