Complaint for homophobic insults against MHSC supporters

Three associations will file a complaint, this Wednesday, for homophobic insults, against the supporters of the MHSC who brandished banners, during the match against Nantes, on Sunday, on which was in particular written “Team of fags”.

According to Stop Homophobia, Mousse and Adhéos, the three associations which have decided to take the case to court, “these banners testify to freewheeling homophobia in football stadiums”. “The Professional Football League has disciplinary power. […] But the sanctions are almost never pronounced, despite the violence and the recurrence of homophobic remarks in the stadiums. This impunity […] trivializes a degraded image of LGBT people”, assure the associations.

Remarks condemned by the minister and the club

According to their lawyer, Etienne Deshoulières, “this legal action must also allow football authorities, clubs and supporters to finally become aware of their responsibilities in the fight against homophobia”.

The Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, condemned these banners on Monday. “These images, these words, these homophobic acts which must disappear from the enclosures of football and sport”, tweeted the minister.

For its part, the MHSC also “condemned in the strongest terms the homophobic remarks made on certain banners”, indicating that investigations are underway and that complaints could be filed. The prosecution also announced on Monday the opening of an investigation.
