Despite the ongoing corona pandemic, significantly more large companies were founded in Germany last year. The number of start-ups even exceeded the pre-crisis level of 2019.

The number of company start-ups in Germany increased again last year and even exceeded the pre-crisis level. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a good 126,900 companies were founded last year after the Corona lull in 2020, the legal form and number of employees of which suggest greater economic importance.

Eight percent more businesses were registered last year than in 2020 and three and a half percent more than a year earlier. Statisticians speak of greater economic importance when, for example, employees are hired or the boss has a tradesman’s certificate. The number of newly established part-time businesses also rose by eleven percent.

Fewer small businesses started

Overall, the number of business registrations last year rose by seven percent to around 704,900. In addition to the establishment of new companies, this also includes takeovers, for example through purchases or becoming shareholders, as well as conversions and relocations from other registration districts.

The picture is bleaker for newly founded small businesses: Here the number of start-ups fell by three percent compared to 2020. Compared to the pre-crisis year of 2019, the number of start-ups even fell by almost 20 percent.

The number of complete business closures, on the other hand, fell by two percent to around 420,100. That was even 15 percent less than in the year before the crisis. “This sharp decline is likely to be related to the government support measures to mitigate the economic consequences of the Corona crisis,” the statisticians suspect.
