Parents and children are low on politicians’ priority lists. This can already be seen from the late point in time at which parliamentarians discussed the new law that is intended to improve quality in daycare centers last Thursday: at 10:25 p.m., at the end of a long day of meetings. Most of those present must have felt just as exhausted as the working parents of small children who have to deal with the disastrous childcare situation in this country on a daily basis. After all, the Bundestag has passed the law and released two billion euros for daycare centers for each of the next two years. But that won’t be nearly enough.
