Comment on Laschet: Union subscription to the Chancellery before the end

A few weeks before the federal election, the Union is as far away from the Chancellery as it has been for a long time. This is mainly Laschet’s fault. It can happen that the voters cancel the Union subscription to the Chancellery.

Armin Laschet just won the power struggle for the CDU chairmanship and in the end “won” the candidacy for chancellor. But he obviously lacks the punch that Markus Söder was generally believed to be capable of. And the sparkling election campaign idea is missing. So far, Laschet has been hesitant – in the pandemic. Or too unconvincing: In tax policy, the CSU simply demands something different from Laschet’s CDU.

Bad poll numbers

He also acted inappropriately, like laughing in the middle of the flood disaster. And he has unpleasant legacies – keyword plagiarism. All of this says little to nothing about Laschet’s qualification for the highest government office in the state. But it scratches what people trust him: the Chancellery apparently less and less.

On the other hand, 30 percent of the people in Germany, which were thought to be unimaginable, want a federal government led by the SPD – equality with the CDU / CSU. But the 41 percent for Olaf Scholz would really hurt the Union if the Chancellor were directly elected. It’s loud at Laschet ARD Germany trend only a meager 16 percent.

Chancellery as far away as it has been in a long time

A few weeks before the federal election, the Chancellery for the Union is as far away as it has been for a long time. What is considered impossible is becoming increasingly possible: a government without the CDU and CSU. It can happen that the voters cancel the Union subscription to the Chancellery. One of them has been warning of this for a long time: Markus Söder. But he shouldn’t be a candidate. The Union now has to live with that.
