Cologne – Union Berlin 2: 2: Modeste saves Cologne a point against Union

Status: 07.11.2021 7:33 p.m.

More possession of the ball, more duels won – but far too little effectiveness: 1. FC Cologne only scored a point against Union Berlin thanks to “cap thief” Anthony Modeste.

At 2: 2 early on Sunday evening (07.11.21), FC missed out on taking three points out of a period of oppressive superiority. Union was on a winning and Champions League course until shortly before the end – before Modeste struck again and stole the hat from his coach Steffen Baumgart while celebrating the goal.

Modeste uses Kainz-Kracher

With two teams that define themselves through great commitment and quickly bridge the midfield after winning the ball, dangerous final situations immediately arose. Especially the FC was immediately full before 50,000 in Müngersdorf. In the 7th minute, Florian Kainz dared a shot from 25 meters, put the ball on the crossbar – Anthony Modeste was mentally faster than the Union defenders and pushed the ball over the line to make it 1-0.

As so often in the past few weeks, the iron were initially sleepy and seemed to need a wake-up call to establish their offensive game. But they responded promptly. Just two minutes after the deficit, Niko Gießelmann put pressure on the left and staged Julian Ryerson in the penalty area, who caught Timo Horn on the wrong foot with his shot in the near corner. The FC goalkeeper didn’t even react – Union was back in the game with the 1-1 draw.

Stieler and the VAR are wrong

In the 28th minute, the video assistant referee should have intervened and ordered referee Tobias Stieler to the sidelines. After an outrageous bad pass from Jonas Hector, Taiwo Awoniyi stormed towards the Cologne penalty area and was placed on the sixteen line by Timo Hübers. But Stieler did not recognize the clear foul, left the game wrongly and was not corrected – there should have been a penalty for Union. If the VAR wanted to have recognized during its review that the foul was taking place outside the penalty area and therefore did not have to intervene, then it was also wrong.

The leadership of the guests would have been completely undeserved. Cologne were the clearly superior team, had almost 70 percent possession and won two thirds of all duels by the break. The effectiveness in the attack was reminiscent of the last 2-0 draw against Dortmund – and was the decisive difference compared to the guests.

Czichos caused the residue

On the one hand, the Berliners were lucky that a Modeste header after a Kainz flank went just next to the goal – and that the FC provided involuntary support. Similar to Hector’s mistake before the break, Rafael Czichos also wanted to playfully solve it from behind – Grischa Prömel made use of his bad pass after a pass from Genki Haraguchi to make it 2-1.

And it almost got worse. In stoppage time, Awoniyi played the completely overwhelmed Hübers dizzy in the six-yard box, had a clear shot, but hit the ball over the crossbar.

Unlucky twice for Hector

But the Cologne team came out of the break as they regularly show this season under Steffen Baumgart: with top morale. In the 54th minute, Kainz should have been rewarded with another assist for his strong performance. But Hector let the measure flank of the best Cologne man by far slip over the forehead and missed the compensation by centimeters.

After that, there was increasing perplexity at FC, Union gained more possession of the ball, but hardly took place offensively. Only a quarter of an hour before the end it became dangerous again, but this time Hector found his master with a hard left-footed shot in Union keeper Andreas Luthe.

Corner Kainz, header Modeste

When it almost looked like a completely unnecessary defeat, the two best Cologne players struck again: Kainz circled a corner kick sharply into the penalty area in the 86th minute, Modeste skipped Timo Baumgartl and headed in to equalize 2-2.

Even after the international break, FC will be back in action on Sundays: Then on November 21, 2021 from 5.30 p.m. at Mainz 05, points will be up. Union receives Hertha for a local derby from 6.30 p.m. the day before.
