Coffee with milk or without? New study gives clear answer

For many, the morning really begins with a Coffee. Whether with milk or without varies from person to person. According to the latest scientific findings, however, one variant is more worthwhile.

Coffee with milk or without? According to research, this is recommended

As researchers in their published on January 30, 2023 study explain, the combination of proteins and antioxidants is said to double the anti-inflammatory effect in immune cells. That speaks for yours drinking coffee with milk. It is now hoped that the health effects on humans can be examined more closely.

How so-called polyphenols – a group of antioxidants that are found in many foods – react with amino acids was little studied until the most recent study. The results seem promising as stated in a statement from the University of Copenhagen called:

“In the study, we show that its inhibitory effect on inflammation in immune cells increases when a polyphenol reacts with an amino acid.”

Marianne Nissen Lund, Professor of Food Research, University of Copenhagen

A series of tests was also carried out with drinks, including coffee with milk. As Nissen Lund explains, there are also positive effects here:

“Our results demonstrate that the reaction between polyphenols and proteins also occurs in some coffee drinks with milk that we studied. In fact, the reaction was so rapid that it was difficult to prevent in any of the foods we analyzed.”

This is how it was investigated

In order to be able to take a closer look at the behavior, an artificial inflammation was induced in immune cells. Some of these cells then received multiple doses of polyphenols that had reacted with amino acids. Other cells received only polyphenols in the same amount.

The researchers observed that immune cells treated with the combination of polyphenols and proteins were twice as powerful at fighting inflammation.

“I can imagine something similar happening to, say, a meat dish with veggies or a smoothie if you make sure to add some protein like milk or yogurt.”
