Coal-Aus eight years earlier: Bundestag decides earlier coal phase-out in NRW | politics

Now it’s a done deal!

Berlin – On the night of Friday, the Bundestag passed a law for the end of coal-fired power plants in NRW by 2030. The new regulation states that the actually planned end date will be brought forward by eight years – previously it was planned to 2038.

At the same time, due to the energy crisis, the continued operation of two lignite-fired reactors, which were actually supposed to be shut down this year, is made possible. The blocks called Neurath D and Neurath E can theoretically run until March 2024. In September 2023, a decision will be made as to whether the term will be extended by another year.

Together, the systems produce 1.2 gigawatts, which roughly corresponds to the output of a nuclear power plant. It is still unclear what will happen to lignite-fired power plants in East Germany. The end date of 2038 still applies to them. However, the traffic light coalition had agreed to “ideally” bring forward the exit in Germany to 2030 overall. (rue)
