Lightning probably ignited the fire. In August 2020, flames spread from Lionshead Canyon, Oregon, in all directions, eating through the dry undergrowth and bearberry native to the western United States, leaving charred undergrowth and dead roots. Three weeks later, a freak storm reignited the flames and carried them to surrounding areas, with an area larger than Munich blazing at its peak. In addition to countless trees and other plants, the “Lionshead” forest fire also destroyed more than 300 houses.
