City trips: These ten cities get crowded in May

Pack your bags and leave, just get away from it all for a few days, discover something new and clear your head – many travelers then decide on city trips. Skyscanner looked at the data. After the rather meager Corona years, tourism is picking up again. Ten cities have emerged as particularly popular travel destinations in May, and things could get pretty crowded there soon.

As in April, the number one place of longing in May is again the favorite island of Germans: Mallorca. The capital Palma de Mallorca leads the ranking of city destinations. Bangkok ranks second. That’s not a surprise. Asia is increasingly becoming the focus of travellers. Compared to the same period in the previous year, it is evident that Taiwan (+411 percent) and Japan (+634 percent) in particular are on the upswing in terms of tourism.

European cities are particularly popular

New York City is third favorite destination. In April, the world metropolis didn’t even make it into the top 10 city destinations, but with rising temperatures, Germans’ desire for the Big Apple is increasing. Otherwise, it is mainly old friends that will be flown to in May, above all Spain and Turkey. Both countries are represented by two cities each in the ranking.

“Skyscanner data shows that spring travel is even more popular among German travelers compared to 2022,” said Friederike Burge of Skyscanner. The travel expert suspects that it’s not just the warm temperatures that attract holidaymakers. “Those who are flexible with their travel dates and travel in the off-peak months like May can get the best deals,” says Burge.

Most travelers do not plan short trips in May, most of them are looking for vacations that last one to two weeks. Anyone planning to fly from May 1st must prepare for a large number of passengers. This is the day most people prefer to go on vacation, according to data analysis.
