Born in Neuss, Christoph Heusgen, 67, was a diplomat who helped shape Germany’s foreign relations for 41 years, twelve of them as foreign policy adviser to Chancellor Angela Merkel and four more as Germany’s ambassador to the United Nations. He has been chairman of the Munich Security Conference since 2022.
