“Chouchous” VS “Macron’s allies” … Between RN and Nupes, the other battle of the Assembly

From our journalist at the National Assembly,

Marine Le Pen looks at her watch. “Before time, it’s not time, we’ll wait a bit …” In a hurry to fight it out, the president of the National Rally group was early on Tuesday for her press conference at the National Assembly. “We are going to use all the means at our disposal so that this text is not voted on as it is”, she said at the microphone, hammering her opposition to the pension reform, debated from this Monday in the hemicycle. This first day of exchanges was the field of a battle in the battle between the RN and the elected officials of Nupes. The objective: to embody the main force of opposition to the text of the government.

Marine Le Pen puts pressure on the left

The choice to organize a press conference was therefore not insignificant. The RN wanted to put pressure on the left even before the opening of the debates. Faced with journalists, Marine Le Pen takes the evening to specify that her troops will vote in favor of the motion of rejection, tabled by the Nupes, to bring down the bill. But what about the left regarding its own referendum motion? “Optimistic in nature, I still hope that a majority of deputies will vote for this motion, starting with those of Nupes…” The RN leader smiled. She already knows that the rebellious deputies, environmentalists, socialists and communists will not join their voices to those of the RN. Whatever, the opportunity is too good to attack his opponents: “They do not punish the RN but their own voters. They have long defended the principle of a referendum on pensions, but will deprive the French of it only out of sectarianism and base political considerations”.

The Nupes tries a shot to double the RN

A few moments after this press conference, all the elected representatives of the Nupes arrive at the same time, in a tight row, through the gardens of the Palais Bourbon. The left had given itself the word to stage the common front against the government’s project. “We are united and determined to have the text withdrawn”, launches the rebellious Mathilde Panot. “Today we represent social mobilization and the people of France, adds André Chassaigne, the boss of communist deputies. We are its spokespersons, its armed arms. The fight promises to be fierce, we will not give up”.

Behind the scenes, the left-wing elected officials did not give up, trying an unexpected blow. Annoyed at having been overtaken by the RN on the referendum motion (losing the draw last week), the elected officials of Nupes file a second in extremis with the Liot group (Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories ). The tactical coup aims to force the President of the National Assembly to throw the coin in the air again. But at the opening of the debates, after heated exchanges and even an interruption of the session, Yaël Braun-Pivet sweeps away the request from the left under boos.

Two different opposition strategies

This game of cat and mouse owes nothing to chance. Both camps hope to embody the leadership of the opposition to the text, and therefore to Emmanuel Macron. Same goal, different strategy. The Nupes intends to push back the government by the street, and in the hemicycle, by filing thousands of amendments, only 13,000 for the rebellious. The RN has only filed a handful, saying it is ready to vote what it sees fit. At the microphone, the leader LFI, Mathilde Panot, is also ironic when addressing the government: “In this hemicycle, you have your favorites. Your comfort opposition is called the National Rally. They tabled 219 small amendments, less than Renaissance. An opposition that does not oppose, no wonder”.

On the side of the RN, we hold more or less the same speech, like Laure Lavalette, RN deputy from Var and spokesperson for the group: “La Nupes, they are the allies of macronie. They have a problem of consistency, because they had Emmanuel Macron elected in 2022 and are therefore responsible for this pension reform ”. The debates must end on February 17 in the Assembly.
