China trip: Habeck on a delicate mission – Economy

Customs, human rights, Ukraine: The Federal Minister for Economic Affairs is heading to China. For the Green Party member, it is perhaps the most difficult business trip to date.

There is nothing simple about this trip, not even its name. This Wednesday, the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs is leaving for China, but officially Robert Habeck is embarking on an “East Asia trip”. After all, he is not flying straight to Beijing, but first to Seoul. The detour to South Korea is intended to make it clear that China is important, very important in fact, but not alone in the region. After all, the Green Minister has been warning for some time against the German economy becoming too dependent on China. The strategy is now called “de-risking”. No turning away, but fewer risks by turning too far towards it.
