Children’s and Youth Museum moves to the trade fair city of Riem – Munich

The decision on the new location of the children’s and young people’s museum has been made: as the culture committee decided by majority on Thursday, the museum should move to the former construction center in Messestadt Riem. The originally planned domicile on the Schwanthalerhöhe, on the other hand, is finally off the table. In April 2020, the city council voted unanimously for a new building in the immediate vicinity of the shopping center there. When it became clear that this variant was not feasible, the private investor offered to integrate the museum into the shopping center instead. However, this would have resulted in significant additional costs. At the end of 2022, the former construction center, which has recently been owned by the city, came up for discussion as an alternative.

According to current planning, the move from the main station to the trade fair city should take place in the first quarter of 2024. The culture department is now to determine the additional costs that arise compared to the originally planned new building on the Schwanthalerhöhe and present them to the city council. An initial estimate by the culture department resulted in additional annual costs of around 300,000 euros. The full assembly of the city council still has to give its final approval.
