Child dies in fire in refugee accommodation in Apolda

A child died in a fire at a home for asylum seekers in Apolda on Sunday morning. This was confirmed by Apolda’s mayor, Rüdiger Eisenbrand. According to the current status, eight more people were injured. Seven breathed in too much smoke and one person was taken to the hospital with a broken leg.

250 people evacuated

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. Part of the building caught fire for a short time. As eyewitnesses reported, the flames are said to have struck meters high from the building.

According to the police, around 250 people had to be evacuated. They were first taken to safety in the gym of a neighboring school. An emergency chaplain is on site.

The building is no longer habitable. The cause of the fire is still unclear. The police has started investigation.
