Chart perennials: These songs stayed in the top 100 for the longest time

Whether a song is a commercial success or not is measured by its placement in the charts. The market research company GfK Entertainment publishes the German top 100 week after week. This usually includes all singles that are sold in Germany. In the meantime, however, downloads, streams on music and video platforms and radio plays are also included in the evaluation.

Some tracks only make a brief stint in the rankings, while others stay there for a long time—sometimes years. The rapper Apache 207 recently set a new record in this category: With his song “Roller” from 2019 he was in the top 100 for 162 weeks – with interruptions – thus replacing a real classic: Until then, namely were wham! with their Christmas hit “Last Christmas” (1984) the long-running German charts.

Evergreen in the German charts: Tom Odell chases Apache 207

In our photo series we show the ten songs that have so far been placed most frequently in the top 100 in Germany. The basis is an evaluation by GfK Entertainment, which star available (status: March 17, 2023). The list is quite volatile: Apache 207 could soon lose its top position again. The British singer-songwriter Tom Odell makes him tough competition. His song “One Love” became a peace song during the Ukraine war and the protests in Iran – and has thus made it back into the charts. Curious: Odell has always been a long way from first place in Germany, ninth place was the highest of emotions for him.

Other songs keep making comebacks for special occasions – that’s what led to the success of “Last Christmas,” as well as “Wonderful Dreams,” a Christmas hit by Melanie Thornton, who died in a plane crash shortly after its release.
