Palace poker in the royal house: who is allowed to live on which property? An overview of the current residence situation.

On important family occasions, the Royal Family waves from the balcony of Buckingham Palace – most recently after the coronation on May 6th. However, the members of the British royal family do not live in the huge castle with 775 rooms, but in several other places. Even the previously popular Kensington Palace is no longer in such demand.

King Charles III (74) and Queen Camilla (75)

The royal couple will continue to reside in Clarence House in London after ascending the throne. It is part of St. James’s Palace, located on The Mall not far from Buckingham Palace. Clarence House has been Charles’ official residence since 2003. When he was married to Diana (1961-1997) he lived in Kensington Palace.

But Clarence House also has a long history. Charles’ mother lived there from 1947 to 1953. In 1950 Charles’ sister Anne (72) was even born there. But when she became queen, Elizabeth II moved her family to Buckingham Palace. Officially, it is still unclear how this will be used in the future. However, royal experts assume that Charles will never move into the castle. Instead, it is expected to be open to the public year-round and also serve as a guest house for state guests. It is currently undergoing extensive renovations.

Prince William (40) and Princess Kate (41)

In August 2022, the royal family confirmed that the couple will move from London to Windsor with their family. The three children George (9), Charlotte (8) and Louis (5) have been attending the nearby private Lambrook School since September. The heir to the throne family occupies the 1831 Adelaide Cottage at Windsor Castle, around 40 kilometers from the capital. The Queen originally intended the tranquil four-bedroom house for William’s brother Harry (38) and his wife Meghan (41) and offered it to them for their 2018 wedding. However, the couple preferred Frogmore Cottage, which is also on the Windsor estate.

On the other hand, Princess Eugenie (33) is said to have been interested in Adelaide Cottage in order to be able to live near her parents. However, she lost out to heir apparent William. In 2022 he moved his main residence from bustling London to Windsor Castle’s tranquil Home Garden, where the Queen resided from 2020. Before that, William and Kate lived in the 20-room apartment 1A of Kensington Palace. They now only have their work residence there.

Princess Anne (72) and Timothy Laurence (68)

Charles’ sister lives with her husband on their private country estate, Gatcombe Park, in Gloucestershire. It is around 170 km west of London. The property was built from 1771. A good 200 years later, Queen Elizabeth II bought it for Princess Anne and her first husband Mark Phillips (74). There are several buildings on the site, one of which is occupied by Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall (42) with her family. In 1978 the neighboring Aston Farm was bought, there is a trout pond and stables for Anne’s horses.

Prince Edward (59) and Duchess Sophie (58)

The King’s youngest brother lives in Bagshot Park in Surrey, about 11 miles south of Windsor. The castle was completed in 1879 and is the last major palace of the royal family. The Queen gave it to her youngest son for his wedding in 1999. At that time, the 57-room building was extensively renovated.

Prince Andrew (63)

Charles’ disgraced brother has lived at the Royal Lodge near Windsor Castle for 20 years. It was previously the residence of his grandmother, Queen Mum (1900-2002). Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson also lives at the Royal Lodge. The Duke of York is currently making headlines for allegedly not wanting to move out of the £30million estate. This was reported, among other things, by “Daily Mail”. But King Charles intended the vacant Frogmore Cottage for Andrew. It is speculated that William and Kate are set to move with their children from small Adelaide Cottage to the larger Royal Lodge.

Princess Beatrice (34) and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (39)

Prince Andrew’s eldest daughter moved to the Cotswolds, a region in southwest England, with her husband and daughter Sienna (1) last year. There, the king’s niece is said to have bought a six-bedroom farmhouse for £3.5million. The family previously lived in an apartment in London’s St. James’s Palace.

Princess Eugenie (33) and Jack Brooksbank (37)

Andrew’s younger daughter has also moved frequently and is said to have not always approved of the allocation of royal residences. After failing to get Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, she moved to Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of London’s Kensington Palace with her husband and son August (2) last year. The family also spends a lot of time in Portugal, where Jack Brooksbank works at the luxury resort CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club.

The couple lived in Ivy Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace from 2018 to 2020. They subsequently lived at Frogmore Cottage after Harry and Meghan moved to the United States.
