Change of coach in football: Effect without the old Hatz – Sport

A working group at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster presented a study a few years ago which states that changes in coaches during the current season do not have any useful effect. The basis of the thesis is the evaluation of statistical data since the founding of the Bundesliga in 1963.

The result of the investigation confirms the suspicion that statistics can prove everything – except the truth. In real football life, even the most useless change of coach has its meaning, even the hitherto exemplary unproductive interventions of Berlin’s Hertha show their – albeit undesirable – value. They testify to the need for renovation of the club.

Even more convincing is the reply that RB Leipzig delivers. The club was just as unhappy with the American Jesse Marsch as Marsch was with the club that hired him. The separation at the beginning of December was the most sensible solution for both sides. With the successor Domenico Tedesco there is now great satisfaction on both sides: at the club – and at Tedesco. The rate of 2.2 points per game should also satisfy the statistics scientists from Münster. However, other aspects are more important for further cooperation.

Eloquent players like Angelino, Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku now feel more at home again

Tedesco had plenty of offers when he returned to Germany last summer after two years at Spartak Moscow. Four Bundesliga clubs and a similar number of clubs from Italy’s Serie A made inquiries, but Tedesco waited until the right offer came – that of RB Leipzig. Since then, the audience has experienced him differently than they knew him from the time at Schalke 04, which was extremely successful in the first year and very unsuccessful in the second: less emotional, less moved, less excited. Not like a man forcing himself to be calm, but like a coach who has learned to remain calm.

In Leipzig, Tedesco found a first-class team that his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann had trained at a high level. However, Tedesco quickly developed his own varied line, which not only produced handsome football, but also relieved him of the prejudice that he could only work with defensive means. Even the hatz against the ball that was once preferred in Leipzig is not his style, eloquent players like Angelino, Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku thank him for it, they now feel in better hands again.

This coaching change has brought its benefits. It will probably be some time before the next exchange in Leipzig. And maybe RB will then receive a good severance payment for Tedesco as for his predecessor Nagelsmann.
