After much hesitation, the German government has promised to supply Ukraine with tanks. The chancellor promises that this will have no effect on Germany’s security.

After the promise of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) assured that Germany’s security was “always in view”. He promises that, said Scholz in his video message “KanzlerKompakt” published in Berlin on Saturday.

“It will always be about coordination, consideration and coordination,” said Scholz. “That is the principle that this government has.” As a goal, Scholz reiterated: “Russia must not get away with pushing borders by force.” Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. For months, the Ukrainian army has been fighting off new waves of attacks in the east of the country.

Scholz said that many citizens wish “that the war is not getting closer, that the government and the chancellor keep their nerves”. He said, “That’s exactly what I promise you.”

After much hesitation, the federal government promised Ukraine 14 Leopard 2 tanks from Bundeswehr stocks on Wednesday. Other countries such as the USA had also announced that they would supply battle tanks to Kyiv. Scholz was heavily criticized for hesitating on the battle tank issue.
