Status: 03.11.2021 10:55 p.m.

On Wednesday (November 3rd, 2021) RB Leipzig missed many chances against Paris St. Germain, but this time the efforts were rewarded with a late point win. It is still no longer possible to advance in the Champions League.

In the first leg, Leipzig was only extremely unlucky with the 2: 3 the defeated team after a very strong game. The performance from the game in Paris continued on Wednesday, coach Jesse Marsch’s team started furiously – and quickly scored the opening goal. In the eighth minute Andre Silva crossed into the penalty area, where Christopher Nkunku scored the 1-0 with a diving header – it was already the fifth goal of the French in the current competition.

Even after that, RB stormed on. After a foul on the edge of the penalty area on Nkunku, referee Andreas Ekberg let go of advantage, Silva got the ball, but was knocked over by Danilo – penalty kick. The fouled competed himself and missed against PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made Italy the European champions with his saves on penalties against England in the summer (12th).

Paris uses its chances coldly

From Paris, which had to do without Lionel Messi, there was nothing to be seen on the offensive afterwards either. Instead, Konrad Laimer (13th) and Nkunu (17th) had further good chances to extend the Leipzig leadership. These missed opportunities were immediately punished. After 20 minutes, the attacking exceptional talent of the French showed their class, in the last step Kylian Mbappé passed across Georginio Wijnaldum, who only had to push the ball into the empty goal.

As a result, the game was no longer as rich in highlights, but the next highlight led to a goal for the guests. After a corner from Angel di Maria, Marquinhos headed the ball to Wijnaldum, who scored his second goal from close range (39th). The first half was a reflection of the first leg at the latest at this point: Leipzig played strong, Paris scored the goals – even if Mbappé missed the great opportunity for the third goal in stoppage time.

Leipzig will be rewarded shortly before the end

The French striker also left his first chances in the second half (48th / 63rd). Mbappé’s speed couldn’t get the Leipzig defense under control, but he lacked accuracy at the end. Angelino had that in his attempt in the 65th minute, but Marquinhos saved from the line for the already beaten Donnarumma and prevented the Leipzig equalizer.

Dominik Szoboszlai missed an even greater opportunity. After a cross from Nkunku, he missed the opposing goal from ten meters (72.). Then RB pressed on, Paris countered – but neither team came to further dangerous actions. Up to the 90th minute. After Presnel Kimpembe got on too hard, the Bundesliga club scored a second penalty. This time Szoboszlai tried it and scored to make it 2-2. With seven points behind in second place, RB can no longer reach the round of 16 with two remaining games.
