Interviewed by

It is the world’s largest manufacturer of building materials, especially cement and concrete: the Swiss company Holcim, headquartered in Zug, has annual sales of around 29 billion Swiss francs and the business is running. The German Jan Jenisch, 56, has been at the helm since 2017 – he has to make the company sustainable. The problem: Large amounts of CO₂ are generated during the production of building materials. Experts estimate that global cement production accounts for at least six percent of global greenhouse gases. Now four residents from Indonesia want to sue Holcim, they are demanding damages, they are supported by environmental and human rights organizations. They argue that Holcim has made a massive contribution to climate change over the past few decades.
