CDU boss Laschet has in the parliamentary group meeting of the Union after ARD-Information announced a personnel realignment of the party. The process is apparently to be initiated with a party congress.

In view of massive criticism because of the poor performance in the federal election, the CDU chairman and candidate for Union chancellor Armin Laschet in the parliamentary group meeting of the Union ARD-Information announced a personnel realignment of the party. According to several participants, he spoke of a party congress at which this is to be initiated.

Continue without lashing?

The news agency Reuters reported, with reference to participants, that Laschet wanted to moderate the process of the party reorganization. First of all, the electoral failure had to be processed, then a renewal of the content and personnel, he said and received a lot of approval, it said. When this could lead to the election of a new CDU boss, however, remained open.

Laschet indicated that he would postpone his own ambitions for possible Jamaica negotiations with the Greens and the FDP. “If it goes better with other people, then gladly”, quoted him the news agency dpa. He went on to say: “First the project is in place and then the person.” The party no longer needs a battle between people, but a joint proposal for a consensus – as he has now done with Hendrik Wüst in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Laschet had proposed the North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Wüst on Tuesday as his successor – as Prime Minister and as CDU state party leader.

Still open to Jamaica talks

Laschet said about the negotiations with the Greens and FDP on Sunday and Tuesday that they were very well prepared. The fact that no confidentiality could be provided is not a good sign. Many people would still be waiting for a Jamaica coalition of the Union, the Greens and the FDP. “We have to be ready until the last second and not insult anyone,” Laschet was quoted as saying. He does not know how the SPD, Greens and FDP wanted to bring their issues together in a traffic light.

After the switching conference with the parliamentary group at 6.30 p.m. in the CDU headquarters in Berlin, Laschet wants to appear before the public. Since the election defeat in the Bundestag election, there has been speculation that the CDU chief would withdraw. Laschet had already announced that if the Jamaica option failed, he would not become the leader of the opposition.
