Category 3 Hurricane Roslyn makes landfall

“Roslyn made landfall on the west coast of Mexico, near Santa Cruz, Nayarit, around 1:20 p.m. Its sustained winds reach 195 km/h. The alert is signed by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in the United States. The category 3 eye of the cyclone is located 90 km from Tepic, the capital of Nayarit state, and is moving at 26 km / h towards the north-northwest. Santa Cruz is a small town located in the district of Santiago Ixcuintla and has about 1,200 inhabitants who are mainly dedicated to fishing and agriculture.

The Mexican Meteorological Service has warned for its part that Roslyn causes strong winds, intense rains, electric shocks and waves that can reach six meters on the coasts of the states of Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima (West), in the Pacific. In the resort town of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state, home to some 220,000 people and one of the largest cities in the hurricane-affected area, winds and rough seas began to intensify around 11 a.m. hours. Hundreds of residents of at-risk areas left their homes to join shelters or relatives’ homes, while commercial activities were suspended at the end of the afternoon.

Roslyn transformed into a category 4 hurricane in a few hours on Friday, putting the authorities and the inhabitants of the states of Nayarit and Jalisco on high alert. It is the most devastating phenomenon of the season in the Pacific. A hurricane of category greater than 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale (out of 5) is considered a potentially catastrophic “major” phenomenon. Just two decades ago, Category 4 Hurricane Kenna hit the coast of Jalisco state, killing four people and causing millions of casualties. In October 1997, Paulina, also ranked 4, devastated Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, killing over 200 people.
