Caroline Garcia surprised in the final by American Alycia Parks

It’s her tournament, of which she is an ambassador and a shareholder, at home in Lyon. But Caroline Garcia will have to wait at least another year to win this WTA 250 ranked eventcreated in 2020. The 5th in the world, seeded number 1, fell in the final this Sunday against Alycia Parks (79th) in two sets (7-6 [9-7]7-5).

Despite a public all committed to her cause at the Palais des sports de Gerland, Garcia (29) was surprised by the 22-year-old American, victorious of her first title on the big circuit, after two successes in WTA 125 tournaments, in December in Andorra la Vella and Angers, which allowed him to enter the Top 100.

Calm and imperturbable in the face of pressure but also thanks to her physique (1.85m), she was able to rely on her excellent serve with in particular fifteen aces (55.4% of first serves) and above all 84.8% of points earned on his first ball to win.

A lackluster start to the year

For Caroline Garcia, who had already faced Parks in 2021 in Cincinnati for a difficult victory in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, the start of the year is quite average. She lost in January in the round of 16 of the Australian Open against the Polish Magda Linette.

The Lyonnaise missed the opportunity to win her twelfth title on the WTA circuit, while she remained the only seed in the event at the time of the semi-finals on Saturday.
