In the VW group, Porsche is considered a pearl of returns – and is also given preferential treatment in the midst of the chip shortage. No wonder the outlook is rosy.

Despite problems with the supply of electronic chips, the sports car manufacturer Porsche wants to continue growing significantly this year.

“If I look at the current order backlog, I am very confident for 2022. Growth in sales this year could be at a similarly high level as in 2021,” said sales manager Detlev von Platen of the industry newspaper “Automobilwoche” (Monday). Last year, the Volkswagen subsidiary sold 301,915 cars, increasing deliveries by around eleven percent. With the same strong growth, Porsche would have around 335,000 cars this year.

In the VW Group, high-margin models are sometimes given preference with the scarce chips in order to keep profits high despite the production problems – and Porsche is the pearl of returns in the Wolfsburg car group. The demand for new vehicles is also high, which leads to price increases in the market with long delivery times, which in turn benefits the car manufacturers.

On the other hand, the shortage of semiconductors is having a negative impact on production worldwide. For example, the Volkswagen core brand VW passenger cars sold 4.9 million cars last year, a good 8 percent fewer cars than in the already weak previous year 2020, which was burdened by lockdowns. At the VW premium subsidiary Audi, the minus was 1.68 million delivered cars to 0.7 percent.
