A woman died and three people were injured this Sunday evening when a car drove into a group of demonstrators protesting the death of a black man killed by police in Minneapolis, the city where George Floyd was killed, have the police announced on Monday.
The driver, a white man, was pulled out of his vehicle by protesters who blocked him while waiting for police to arrive, according to images posted on social media and a police statement.
The driver may be drugged or alcoholic
A protester was transported in critical condition to a local hospital where she died. Three other people sustained minor injuries. The driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident, investigators said.
Demonstrators were gathered to protest the death of Winston Smith Jr., an African-American who was shot and killed on June 3 during his arrest by a team of the US Marshals.
Police say Winston Smith Jr. was killed in a shootout, and a pistol and cartridge cases were found in his car. This version is however contradicted by the passenger of the car who affirms, according to his lawyers, that he was not armed.

The metropolis in the north of the country has been under tension since the death of George Floyd in late May 2020, an African-American suffocated below the knee of a white police officer during his arrest. His murder sparked historic anger against racism and police violence in the United States.
Police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in April and will face his sentence on June 25.
