A A car with two young people drove into a ditch in eastern Lower Saxony – a 16-year-old died. A 14-year-old was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. It was initially unclear who was behind the wheel, as were the circumstances of the accident.

The car was lying on its roof in a ditch near Söllingen and, apart from parts of the rear, was almost completely submerged in water, the police said. A walker spotted the vehicle on a dirt road and alerted the emergency services. According to initial findings, the accident occurred around four to five hours before the vehicle was discovered.

When the police arrived, the two young people were still in the vehicle and the 14-year-old was approachable. The fire department freed both of them from the car. Any help came too late for the 16-year-old; the 14-year-old was flown to a clinic in a rescue helicopter.

According to previous investigations, the car left the road in a left-hand bend, probably due to excessive speed, rolled over and ended up lying on its roof in the ditch.

An expert should now clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. A blood sample was taken from the 14-year-old. The police investigation is ongoing.
