Long-time Mercedes chief strategist James Vowles will succeed German Jost Capito as Williams Formula 1 team boss.

Long-time Mercedes chief strategist James Vowles will succeed German Jost Capito as Williams Formula 1 team boss.

The 43-year-old Englishman will join the traditional British racing team on February 20 before the first Grand Prix of the year in Bahrain. Williams announced this without providing any information on the contract period.

“It’s an honor to join a team with such an incredibly rich heritage. The team is an icon of our sport, which I respect very much and I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” said Vowles. Capito resigned at the beginning of December after two years as team boss at Williams.

In the Formula 1 circus since 21

Vowles is one of the most brilliant minds in the Formula 1 paddock and has worked for the Mercedes factory team since 2010, most recently as chief strategist for four years. He had previously worked for BAR, Honda and Brawn GP. In the Silver Arrows, he played a major role in the eight Constructors’ titles in a row from 2014 and the seven Drivers’ titles in a row from 2014 to 2020.

Mercedes loses a top employee. “Obviously we are sad to say goodbye to him but we wish him every success and are delighted that he is taking the next step in his career with Williams, a strong technical partner of ours who is very close to my heart,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
