Gold, silver or bronze: The organic portion of the food should soon be recognizable in canteens and people by a logo. Food Minister Özdemir has presented a corresponding draft – there is huge potential there.

In canteens and canteens, diners will soon be able to identify the organic portion in the respective kitchen by a new logo. This is provided for in a draft regulation by Federal Food Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens), which the Federal Cabinet has dealt with.

The regulations are also intended to make it easier for providers of out-of-home catering to participate in organic certification of products and ingredients. Provisions are also made for controls.

Federal government is aiming for strong organic growth

17 million people in Germany eat in a canteen or canteen every day. Özdemir said mass catering facilities have huge potential to provide healthy, nutritious and sustainable food for young and old alike.

With the new logo, suppliers could label the organic portion voluntarily, easily and verifiably. The levels are gold with 90 to 100 percent organic, silver with 50 to 89 percent and bronze with 20 to 49 percent – each based on the monetary value of the entire purchase of goods.

Özdemir emphasized that organic farming makes a significant contribution to protecting the environment and resources. The federal government has therefore set itself the goal of expanding organic farming to 30 percent of agricultural land by 2030. “In order for more farmers to be able to switch to organic, supply and demand must develop in harmony over the long term.”

According to the ministry, the draft for the regulation was submitted to the EU Commission in mid-March. The Federal Council should therefore vote on it by summer.
