California: Storms claim lives again – Panorama

A tornado has struck the Los Angeles metropolitan area — a rarity in the area. Meanwhile, fatalities are to be lamented again across the US state. Floods destroy houses, storms tear down trees.

For several months now, the US state of California, which stretches over 1300 kilometers along the Pacific coast, has been repeatedly hit by severe storms. This time both the northern region around San Francisco and Los Angeles in the south are affected. Local authorities again reported fatalities, mainly from fallen trees.

As the Los Angeles Times reported, a team from the National Weather Service has since confirmed that Montebello, a city in Los Angeles County, was hit by a rare tornado, injuring at least one person. Meanwhile, downtown Los Angeles got the most rain since the last record was set in 1893.

It was even worse in northern California, where at least five people died around the metropolitan area of San Francisco. Strong storm brought down trees, which then fell on cars. Great damage was also caused by flooding and debris flying through the air.

A flood warning remained in effect Wednesday afternoon local time for southern California and a winter storm warning for the San Bernardino Mountains. The weather is then supposed to calm down for the time being, but more precipitation is possible in the coming week.
