Cafes in Haidhausen: These eight are unique and worth a visit – Munich

Preysinggarten

Behind the ivy tendrils, garden gate and flower pots, it almost feels like being on the terrace of a small Italian holiday home in Preysinggarten, only in Haidhausen – and you can see that at the latest from the many strollers and bicycle trailers parked there. Bavaria and Italy meet on the menu, for example in the six breakfast options, where Milanese salami and Tegernsee mountain cheese are served. You can have breakfast in the Preysinggarten until 3 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.

Because children are regular customers, special care is taken with them. They don’t have the typical fish fingers or spaghetti to choose from, but, for example, a gratinated vegetable casserole or baby calamari. The adjoining playground and a large games, painting and book box inside make the Preysinggarten a popular family restaurant. But even without children there are enough reasons to pay him a visit – also because the Italian classics come here in imaginative and fresh versions. The Aperol Spritz is also available as a Limoncello Spritz or Fragola Spritz with strawberry mousse.

Cupital No. 3

Panini, tramezzini and an espresso or cappuccino: In the Cupital No. 3 focuses on Italian breakfast – although there is no real breakfast menu. Sandwiches can be selected from the display case at the counter – with tuna and remoulade, chorizo or ham. However, the focus is not on the food, but on the coffee. It is seen here as a stimulant, not just as a drink that wakes you up. The offer is on black boards that hang up in the restaurant. We especially recommend the types of coffee where the barista can convince with latte art.

By the way, from 11.30 a.m. onwards, an Asian wind usually blows in the café not far from the Bavarian Parliament. The restaurant offers a small selection of lunch dishes until 3 p.m. – for example Bami Goreng or various curries with rice.

Less than 100 meters from Wiener Platz, Nicole and Alex Ugro-Zylberszac have created a place where guests can enjoy top-quality coffee in a relaxed, family atmosphere. The coffee box has a large selection, and the couple changes their coffee almost every month.

But there are also many small delicacies waiting to be discovered: the selection of dishes is quite limited, at least during the week, but the Franzbrötchen and croissants with apricot fillings are more than sufficient for a small breakfast or a snack. At the weekend there are also rather unusual pastries, such as the sweetly filled Israeli specialty Rogalach.

The small café is not suitable for working for hours with books and a laptop, as there is not enough space. But if you have a few minutes and fancy a little chat, you should drop by the stylishly furnished square box in the middle of Haidhausen. Even if it’s just about picking up the coffee-to-go.

Les Deux Messieurs

There couldn’t be a more suitable location for the French bakery Les Deux Messieurs, which is both a café and a bistro: in the middle of the French Quarter, right on Pariser Platz, sweet delicacies meet lots of colour. In addition to the classic petit déjeuner and other breakfast combinations, there are delicious macarons, éclairs and tartelettes aux fruits presented with elegance.

The small sweet delicacies are ideal for the way to work or home. Or you stay and take a seat in the small hall, through which songs like “Oh Champs Elysées…” sometimes ring out – so that there is no doubt about the location. The place fills up quickly on weekends, so it’s worth getting there early.

Les Deux Messieurs is a good place for mothers and fathers who don’t know where to go in trendy Haidhausen. Not only will the offspring be fascinated by the sweets on offer – there is also a play corner and a changing table, also in the men’s toilet.

Fortuna coffee bar

Located between Weißenburger, Bordeaux- and Pariser Platz, the Fortuna Cafébar is a bit like a bar in an Italian student district. A visit is worth it just because you can sit so nicely here: inside on a gallery, outside when the sun is shining, on colorful chairs right in front of the door. The bar is furnished with great attention to detail and things from earlier times. An ancient refrigerator, mosaic tiles and the typical price list on the wall, entitled Listino Prezzi, catch the eye.

The coffee that is on it is not quite as cheap as in Italy – but very good. Various small breakfasts are also on the menu: filled croissants or pretzels with butter, Bircher muesli or Greek yoghurt with walnuts and honey. Or you can choose one of the paninis that are so typical of the restaurant, for example the one with kimchi Emmental cheese and mayo. At the weekend there are – quite un-Italian – white sausages.

Cafe Noel

The area around Weißenburger Platz in Haidhausen is also called “Prenzlauer Berg of Munich” by newcomers. Mothers and fathers with prams can be found disproportionately often here, strolling past Danish baby fashion shops and bars serving ginger-elderberry spritzers. Noel and Niko Tassis are delighted: the Moroccan-Greek couple deliberately runs Café Noel in a family-friendly manner. There are always a few picture books and toys for the little ones on the wooden table in the entrance area, and there is a changing table in front of the toilets.

Dishes such as moussaka, coq au vin and potato curry are on the daily menu, which changes regularly. Breakfast is only available on weekends, but then all day long. And everything that the Haidhauser audience needs to be happy: A large selection of organic teas and other hot drinks, which can of course also be prepared with soy or lactose-free milk. And on top of that: really delicious homemade cakes.

Café Wiener Platz

The refreshing thing about Café Wiener Platz is that it’s so normal. If the metropolitan demand for coolness gets too ubiquitous, you’ve come to the right place in the spacious café with the small black tables and the large bar in the middle. Belonging to this or that style is not important at Wiener Platz.

Couples can feel at home here over breakfast together, as can university friends chatting over a long overdue coffee gossip. This is where business partners brood over their contracts and passionate newspaper readers over the current daily newspaper. Likewise, the writer of lonely thoughts can devote himself to his notebook undisturbed at the individual table right next to the door. The menu is also extensive – for breakfast, lunch and dinner there is a large selection of mostly classic dishes at surprisingly reasonable prices.

Cafe Kathe

The interior of the Café Käthe on Gebsattelstraße is reminiscent of cozy moments at grandma’s. Most of the furniture is from the flea market, the counter comes from the former grocery store that used to be here. A comfortable sofa, soft jazz music and a large selection of books and magazines invite you to linger. Also because the café occasionally becomes a gallery, people like to stay longer and look at the works of the artists.

The small restaurant, which is more in the Au than in Haidhausen, only has six tables – two outside and four inside. Reservation is not possible. Because “there should always be a table free if someone from the neighborhood comes by,” says operator Vera von Rimscha. Families are also welcome, there is a corner with toys for children.

Café Käthe has something for both hearty and sweet breakfasters: croissants, sandwiches or a bowl of fruit. But the real highlight are the homemade and gluten-free cakes and biscuits. There is also an offer for people with other eating needs: lactose-free, nut-free, vegetarian or vegan. Meat lovers, however, have a hard time.
