By bike on the train: please stay back – car & mobile

Fully booked, overcrowded, delayed: anyone who takes their bike on the train often has problems. Deutsche Bahn wants to change that. But are the measures sufficient?

Sweaty but happy – that’s them. The three in their mid-fifties at Nuremberg Central Station say about themselves. A few days ago they started cycling near Magdeburg, then pedaled over the Harz, the Thuringian Forest and through the Franconian region to Nuremberg. Now it’s back again. By train, of course. “We have been doing this for years,” says one of the three cyclists on platform seven. Always a multi-day tour, always with luggage on the bike. And at the end always by train back home. How does it work in practice? “Well,” says one of the three, who calls himself the “chief planner”, and shrugs his shoulders. “Above all, the train journey back could go better.”
