BVB captain Marco Reus von Hamann counted: “Then your DFB career is over”
Marco Reus missed the EM in the summer of 2021 because he voluntarily renounced it. Now Didi Hamann shot against the captain of BVB.

Reus said that before Joachim Löw announced the squad for the Euro “Together with the national coach decided not to go to the EM”. The reason for this he cited was the “complicated, exhausting and, in the end, ‘thank God’ successful season” with BVB, which ended with winning the Cup in Berlin.
The decision to renounce the EM “was” very difficult for him, “said Reus in the summer,” but after a very intense year for me personally and achieving my goals at BVB, I decided to give my body time, to recover”.
Reus had missed several major tournaments with the national team in his injury-ridden career – including winning the fourth World Cup title at the 2014 tournament in Brazil, to which he was unable to travel due to a torn Southesmosis ligament in the last preparatory game.

With the criticism of Reus’ EM waiver in the summer, Hamann is not alone. Steffen Baumgart, coach of 1. FC Köln, showed no understanding for the decision of the Dortmund team captain: “The boy is in excellent shape, this European Championship is very likely the last chance for him to win a big title – and he prefers to go on vacation. I find this decision very special,” said Baumgart dem Westphalia sheet.
Before he renounced the European Championship, Reus had not been invited to the national team by national coach Löw for two years or had missed international matches due to injuries. Löw’s successor Hansi Flick, however, thinks very highly of the offensive player and nominated him directly for the first World Cup qualification games under his direction.
DFB team: Hamann’s squad without Marco Reus
Reus paid back the trust placed in him, scored two goals in the course of the now completed qualification and also prepared four goals. Nevertheless, Hamann cannot understand Flick’s decision to bring Reus back immediately.
“If he now plays an outstanding twelve months and then flies to Qatar with you, that would be completely okay. Then you make a short-term decision,” said Hamann, “but inviting him now always does not suit me.”
