Mats Hummels will leave Borussia Dortmund on 30 June for free. The “Ruhr News“ report, citing their own information, that the 35-year-old central defender will not be made a new offer to extend his expiring contract.

Recently, the TV channel “Sky” reported that the relationship between coach Edin Terzic and Hummels had fallen out. There would therefore be no future together at BVB. It was said that Hummels would only extend his contract if Terzic left. Borussia Dortmund parted ways with the coach on Thursday, but a further collaboration with Hummels is apparently out of the question. The defender seems to have long since fallen out of favor at the club. There has been some skepticism for some time about whether the club wants to continue with the 2014 world champion for another season.

In an interview with “Sport Bild” a few weeks ago, Hummels had stressed his displeasure with the tactical approach, especially in the games against Stuttgart and Leverkusen: “I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund should not play like that – against any opponent in the world.” According to the “Ruhr Nachrichten”, the criticism of the coach and the team has brought Hummels into disrepute within the club. His behavior was seen as impossible and unacceptable. The “Bild” had already reported that Hummels’ end in Dortmund was “virtually a done deal”. Internally, he has fewer and fewer supporters.

Hummels: If he leaves BVB he will move “to a nearby European country”

Hummels leaves BVB after 508 appearances and in second place in the record player ranking. Only Michael Zorc (572) played more often for the Black and Yellows. Hummels, who played for BVB between 2008 and 2016 and since 2019, celebrated winning the German championship with the club in 2011 and 2012 as well as cup victories in 2012 and 2021. They also won the Supercup in 2014, 2015 and 2020.

Hummels had left it open until recently what his future would be. However, he said that if he left BVB he would go “to a nearby European country”. He ruled out a move “to the USA or something similar” and said that ending his career was the least likely option.
